View Full Version : Post Your App Idea
What Android Application, if created, would make your mobile dreams come true? Please nothing ridiculous like, "you press a button and an uber hot chick pops out of the battery pack and is automatically in love with you."
Lets hear them!
I'd love an Android application that could allow you to use your phone as a remote control to change television stations. That would be SIIIIICK. Problem would be if you can go into someone else's house and change THEIR stations.
I think the "receiver" would need to be bluetooth enabled since I don't see phones being able to send infrared signals anytime soon. I guess the key here is actually having a RECEIVER that has the technology. The application is probably the easy part.
How cool would it be if you could use your phone to take video that automatically streams - and is saved to - your account on a website? People could browse by users, locations, etc... and see who is currently "phonecasting" video and watch them live.
This could be crazy if people take their phones into sporting events, concerts, etc... and you can browse streams by location... you could potentially pinpoint events going on and see video streams from people filming at the event with their phone.
Pretty crazy if you ask me. And very doable.
So you're walking along... but wouldn't mind hopping on a bus, catching a metro, jumping in a cab, etc... what is the QUICKEST or CHEAPEST way from point A to B?
This app would list all your options with distance, time, price and more. Supposing you select "bus" it would then help you navigate to the closest bus stop. It might also alert you to where the closest cab is or even connect you directly to a cab company who would instantly come to the GPS location referred to them.
When you buy something, you scan the receipt and can manage your expenses and accounting OH so easily. You'd also have permanent records if the IRS comes knocking on the door.
As you're on your trip you take pictures, type using a full qwerty keyboard, etc... and a LIVE journal is kept with features such as GPS location, time of input, etc to create a more dynamic "live journal"
Actually this just sounds like posting to wordpress from your phone with your location auto-filled via GPS hahahaha not really that exciting.

Wow that is an AMAZING idea. Make it and sell it to H&R Block! Or TurboTax! It would also be cool if you could scan a barcode in a store and your Android Phone would tell you how far away you would have to go to get a better deal on the same thing.

An App Called "Employ Me" Where you could just walk around places and it would show you the closest places that were hiring and you could filter it by things like FT/PT, pay, experience, line of work, etc...
Unemployed? Walk out your front door and find the closest job possible!

Yeah its possible but for tv's and stuff the phone needs an IR sensor... Not sure my iphone has one or its at least hidden among the light/proximity sensor. Dont get me wrong... How cool would that be! I would love it! I want my android phone to literally do everything for me! Not that i ask the world or anything ;)
If the phone could really do anything, they should call it the "Belvedere" as in "Mr. Belvedere".
Screw the Dream, I want the HTC Belvedere! Fetch me dinner, Belvedere phone!

Livecast is company providing the living streaming and let users to upload their streaming files to their distributed worldwide web servers. Instread of peer to peer live streaming, it supports broadcasting: phone to phones, phone to PCs, and PC to Phones.
I was supposed to port our Livecast application on GPhone. But it seems Android has not provided the Live streaming API. I hople they could provide the access to the Stream Encoder so that I could complete my project asap.

Hi Rob- Could you repost my reply as a new thread instead? I think more folks will see it there. Thanks!
I would like to see more stats kept for phonebooks
Longest calls?
How many sms/phonecalls/emails sent to a person?
How many contacts have I never contacted?
Who do I call less than once a month?
All call information could be dumped into a tiny database and the sorted on demand.

There was an interview with one of the two guys at Google, I can't remember if it was Larry or Sergei, but they talked about how several years from now, you'll be able to walk into a store, look at an item, put that item's product code into Google, and it'll give you a price comparison on that item for every retail outlet in a 10 mile radius. I'd really love to see stuff like that. Android would be more like a tri-corder from Star Trek than a phone at that point.

"There are not one, but two, apps that basically do the same thing: compare prices and save us money. Using the camera, you can "scan" the barcode of an item by snapping a picture. The app will then comparison shop for you. You can read online reviews and even create price alerts if the price drops. CompareEverywhere also lets you use the GPS to find nearby stores and then call them directly."

So the device doesnt end up being as misunderstood and in the end powered down as B-4; it HAS to have an MS exchange client.
Much though I hate to admit it, Exchange is the de facto standard for corporate email.
Will there be an Android client that will support both email and calendar.
Without this, it will never be suitable for most business users.
And I REALLY dont want to 'have to' buy an iphone....

What about a app that syncs up with those child finder devices that tell you the general direction of your child, example is the duracell commercial with the mother in the park and loses her son.
But with android you dont just get a arrow telling which way to go , you get to "see" through google maps where the child is. Possibly a how far in feet/meters, and a compass. This could also be used to know were other members of your family are, similar to the whole "Where you at" idea that , I can't remember their name, company had.
This app could also be used with things like onstar, except that it wouldn't just be for your car. In a emergency you could press a panic button that would tell 911 were you are at.
what do you think?
I'm 99.9999% sure one of the Android Developer Challenge Winners had a feature that does this in their application. It was a general family protection/safety app and seemed like it covered all the bases for parents.
But remember, to know where your kids are they'll have to be carrying an Android Phone too... on them.

I said it in another thread, but first off, shoutcast would be cool. Since the phone will be forever connected to the net.
Secondly, a skype app (I KNOW someone is plottin this already)
Let me think, I know there are some gamers out there (I am one of them) possibly some type of app that lets you know release date, tracks acheivements and trophies
And finally, I don't know if it was mentioned but a RSS app would be cool too,
I wonder if you can connect to Hulu on that phone? That would own on those trips to work for me.

I'd love to see an AIM/MSN/Yahoo IM client that uses GPRS/EDGE/3G instead of our SMS message bucket. Having to pony up and additional $10/mo ($120/year) for unlimited texts kinda sucks.
What would make it even better is to have a component that would allow you to provide your own backend proxy services. Essentially, your computer at home would connect to AIM/whatever and your G1 would connect to your computer. That way you always show up as being online, even if your G1 drops into a no coverage area. While you are not connected, your home computer could queue up messages that would get delivered when you get back into a service area. Conversely, you'd be able to "send" messages when you are in a no coverage area, they'd be queued up and sent out when you got back into a coverage area.
In other words, extremely similar to how the sidekick works, it's just that you provide the backend server, rather than tmobile.

A news ticker of events happening locally and a setup that allows alarms for certain events you want to go to.
Ex. I heard In n Out is having its 60th anniversary on Oct 22 (Yes I know G1 DAY! But I'm not sure if it's true) and will be serving Burgers for super cheap. I think around 15 - 50 cents or something like that. Anyways, an example would be that the G1 would have this event on a reel somewhere and I could set an alarm for this, which it will remind me. The GPS will help me find out which is the closest location and so on.
If anyone else understands what I'm saying pleas help me out.. otherwise sorry if I lost you haha.

Interesting idea...
There was an article on CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/ptech/10/14/cellphones.driving.ap/index.html)today about a new service. It's aimed at teen drivers and essentially turns off their phone any time they are moving at "car speeds". While I can see a lot of problems with the concept (what if they are a passenger, on a bus, etc....) it is an interesting idea.
The article talks about it being developed as a service from providers for something like $10-20/month but I bet you could build the same functionality into an android phone as an application.

Hey i'm just throwing another idea out there. How about a program that records your voice and writes down what you say?? Maybe as a text or in an email while your are driving(for those who would rather NOT talk to the person)I figured maybe it can have a dictionary stored which includes pronunciations with every word so I'm wondering if this is feasible? I'm sure it will run into problems with some wprds that aren't in the dictionary and for some with a accent...Maybe take it a step further and have it translate what you say into another language?! I'm sure that would be easy once the app had what you said written. Again I'll note this might already be in production or it might be years away from being a possibility. What do you think?

Ok, I do not know about the rest of you, but I am frankly tired of the "Unidentified" calls and then of course the calls that you do not want to accept, such as old girlfriends etc and they continue to contact you. Most cell phones do not have the option to block a number from contacting you. I would love the ability to block certain numbers, unidentified or anonymous numbers and only take the calls I desire to take!

Take that app that lets you compare product prices by taking pictures of the bar code (smartshop or something like that?) and let it simply track your purchases while you're in a store. You tell it what store you're in, and as you throw things into your shopping cart, you first take a picture of the bar code and then tell it how many you're buying. It should be able to track sales tax, etc.
It should also have a mode where you can use items in your pantry, or items from online databases, to build a shopping list. Bonus if you can tell it, over time, where in the store that item is located, so that when you come back for future shopping trips, it will order your shopping list accordingly. That way you don't have to hunt back and forth from aisle to aisle to make sure you got everything on your list (nor will you have a bunch of missed items at the end of your trip, forcing you to go back through the store to find them), nor do you have to scan through your list to make sure you got everything from the current aisle.

Someone just wrote an interesting app for Maemo (Nokia's linux for its N810 "internet tablet") called BlueMaemo (http://www.valeriovalerio.org/?page_id=174).
I'd modify it as follows:
1) doesn't currently work with Mac OS X -- add that.
2) add support for remote devices that support Bluetooth BIP (specifically, the ability of a BIP device to remotely display its screen).
Now you can remotely display another device's screen on your Android device, and use your keyboard to type on it, and use your screen as a trackpad for it.
And, one more: make it so that Android can support Bluetooth HID and BIP as well, so that you can port that app to run on Windows/Mac/Linux, and remotely control your Android phone from your desktop or laptop computer.

This has three aspects, and would probably need to be a native app instead of a java app:
0) Wifi Access Point - like Joikuspot (or like Cradlepoint PHS and CTR devices), but for Android. Turns your Android phone into a wifi access point / personal hotspot. Also solves the tethering problem. (though, you might want to get an external battery for it, or an extended battery, but IMO it'd be worth it)
1) embedded Jabber server for SMS/MMS messaging - You could run a jabber client on your laptop/desktop and connect it to your phone. Your phone would then send your text/picture messages through this jabber connection.
2) embedded SIP server for calls - same as above, but for voice calls. This would let you receive calls from any SIP program (running on your laptop/desktop) or SIP device (some voip phones, some other phones, etc).
(#1 and #2 should be usable whether your phone is being used as an access point, or a wifi client; but if you're using it as a client, you'll need some way to tell your jabber/sip clients what your phone's IP address is, so that they can connect to it)
When you're on the move, you can use your phone directly for SMS/MMS/voice ... but when you get somewhere where you can pull out your laptop, or sit down at a desktop, you don't have to keep switching back and forth between computer and phone to continue a conversation. It all just seamlessly blends together, in terms of communication capability.

In the world of retail and wholesale, we never keep the aisles stagnant.
Items should and will be rotated.
WHY?
Many reasons:
Creates the illusion of NEW merchandise. If you never go down aisle 10, moving something from aisle 10 to aisle 1, sales might increase.
If Product A didn't sell well in aisle 123, swap it with another product. If sales increase, good move. If not, move it back.
There are so many flaws with this idea. But IF IT SHOULD WORK, fukken-ay, I'd be damned glad.

WOW!?

I'll take this following:
It's already installed - calculator.
Calculator will automatically analyze the barcode, determine the price, and add it to a running total for this shopping trip? Impressive, I've never seen another calculator app, on any platform, that does that.
Or did you just not understand what I was saying?
Yes, I could scan each item, get the correct price (because it's not always easy to just look at the shelf or item and get the current price that way), and enter it into a stupid-calculator program ... but, the whole point of the request is for something more intelligent and automated than that.
Perhaps you don't get that.
This will NOT work.
In the world of retail and wholesale, we never keep the aisles stagnant.
Huh. 95% of shelf organization in the stores I go to are "stagnant" enough in their layout that the idea would at least be helpful, even if it wasn't perfect.

This one isn't so much an application, as a suggestion/feature request for the built-in SMS application (perhaps as an alternative, but maybe in addition to what I said above about the phone having a built-in Jabber server):
1) Fully integrate Google Talk and Android's SMS/MMS features. You can use a Google Talk session to send SMS/MMS messages out using your phone number as the source (authenticated some how to keep people from impersonating you), and incoming SMS/MMS messages could be mirrored to your Google Talk session.
2) Have a setting for whether or not you want to automatically save your SMS/MMS messages to your Gmail account's "Chats" folder, along with your other Google Talk chats (as two separate settings, so you can just do your regular chats, just do your SMS/MMS messages, do both, or do neither).
3) Allow your Gmail web session to be used for sending SMS/MMS messages directly, just like you can for Chats.
So, if you're on your laptop/desktop, you'd have the ability to continue your SMS/MMS conversations without interruption, and you'd be able to manage their archiving just like you do for Google Talk.
Bonus if they finally enable Google's Jabber service to do gatewaying to AIM, Yahoo, MSN, IRC, and other Jabber services. Then you could have all of your IM's archived in your Chats folder.

I was being a sarcastic ass.
Milk = $2.89
Eggs = $1.29
Bread = $1.99
You buy 1 gallon of milk, one case of eggs and two loaves of bread (2.89 + 1.29 + 1.99 + 1.99) + 8.25% estimated sales tax = $8.80
Perhaps you don't get that.
Perhaps you don't get that.

How would a dedicated application make it easier for you to shop when there are literally millions of different barcode combinations?

@organizedFellow:
I'm not sure where you shop, but while individual items may move a little within an aisle, for the most part all the grocery stores I go to are organized the same basic way and items within certain categories are always in the same place. If some spaz moved things around constantly to waste my time, I'd go shop somewhere else.
Yeah you move around an end-cap display pretty often, but bread is always in the same place. Some creative marketing genius never decides it might sell better next to the tampons.
I guess if your weekly shopping list regularly includes items from women's boutique shops like the Coach store, you might find things shuffled around drastically, but ice cream goes in coolers and coolers are friggin heavy, ergo ice cream will always be in the same aisle.
It would be really handy to have a grocery list in location order for a change.

I shop almost exclusively at Costco, sometimes Target, or Walgreen's/CVS for convenience.
I never go to Wal-Mart cause I don't like their business ethics (did you know they regularly FIRE topped out employees just to save money?).
While true, most grocery stores are organized the same basic way and items within certain categories are always in the same place.

Who is going to input these regular items into a database of UPC codes to ease your shopping woes so you can make a map of your shopping trip to avoid walking past the detergent you already bought (remember the milk!)?
Would you all be more thrilled with a layout schematic of Wal-Mart Supercenter, so you can stop wasting time looking for the 24 piece TupperWare set your wifes friend bought?
And we don't move things around to 'waste your time'.
Frankly (don't get offended), but if you feel that shopping is a waste of your time cause you don't want to go looking for something, then perhaps you shouldn't be shopping.
We place products where they sell best, as you already mentioned. It is not uncommon for an ENTIRE aisles contents be shifted to the next aisle to expose some new products.
But in all likelihood, a pen & paper would be your best friend, along with a predetermined spending limit and sheer willpower to avoid tossing those Frito's in the shopping cart. That's what I do and it has done well for me and +95% of the shoppers I serve.

It would be cool to be able to install a service (not necessarily a graphical app) that gave someone responsbile with sensitive data i.e., Google, GPS coordinates of every device using Android (and, if other carriers/services want to join, them) to provide a sort of usage map, traffic congestion, or something therabouts.
I've always wanted something like this. Not necessarily to see WHERE people are, but to see how MANY people are in a certain place.

Yeah, it's not hard to overlay a circle of a certain size over a city, say, Salt Lake (no bias, no bias), and change the color from blue to red as the city gets "hotter" with more usage and whatnot. Something like that.
I'm personally really not a fan of "what bars/clubs/restaurants are people at?" apps that give you random information about random people. I'd just really like to know how many people are using android/mobile devices (maybe even the carrier/manufacturer) in a certain area.
OrganizedFellow

Yeah, same here.
Like this one:
Wertago (http://code.google.com/android/adc_gallery/app.html?id=49) is the mobile application nightlifers have been waiting for—a single application that shows you up-to-the-second information about what venues are hot, helps you coordinate plans with all your friends, lets you share content and influence the social scene, and enables you to connect with socialites all across the city. Nightlife will never be the same!
I'm not into that.
It would be clever if this app idea would show some other information about the person or their phone:
Has the G1 or the G2. Or has a different Android device.
Whether the phone runs on Android 1.0 or 1.1.
If the phone has the same game/app installed as you, and a prompt alerts you to the fact, so you can share your opinions on it.

For sure. In all reality (with that "Wertago" app), who REALLY uses this, other than a few casual try-and-get-bored attempts? Who of your friends is also hanging out at a bar, with a smartphone, albeit one capable of this, that you don't know about, and you want to coordinate plans with MULTIPLE people? I personally don't think it would be practical to have some 3rd party app to coordinate friends unless it is the de-facto standard.

@organizedFellow:
Nobody needs to record the layout of every store and the location of every product in it. If the user orders their regular shopping list by aisle manually once, and then scans each item in the order they are picked up, it would be trivially easy to rearrange the items manually after the fact. Once the app is trained for a while, the user would find himself seldom if ever manually arranging the locations and the app would 'just work'. Even better if the user took a second to get a gps fix outside the store after making a big purchase, the app would know where certain products come from and could alert the user (or a member of their family) when they happen to be close to a place where something is currently active in their shopping list.

Sorry this was from way at the top of the thread but I really haven't been keeping up with it. I know the shop savvy will allow you to scan barcodes and give you info and price from many different stores, but one thing that he said that I don't remember shop savvy saying it would do is give prices for only NEARBY stores. If I need to buy..... a hard drive, and so I scanned it and shop savvy told me compusa had the same hard drive for half the price than the store I'm at now, that's great, but since most of the CompUSAs have closed, the closest one is a long drive away. It would nice to be told prices ONLY from NEARBY stores. This could be a feature added to shop savvy in the future, or maybe it's already capable of this and I just haven't heard about it, but this is a key feature that Hodges said that makes it a much more useful program than shop savvy already will be.

Database of UPC codes ... where is Shop Savvy getting theirs? Clearly the information is out there, and this is just yet another mashup.
Order within the store ... could be a similar database, or could be a personal preference, where the application notices that for a given store you always put the milk before the detergent, therefore whenever your shopping list contains both milk and detergent, it orders it such that the milk is earlier than the detergent. Over time, you build up enough of these relationships, and the correct ordering of the entire list will fall into place.
And we don't move things around to 'waste your time'.
Frankly (don't get offended), but if you feel that shopping is a waste of your time cause you don't want to go looking for something, then perhaps you shouldn't be shopping.

Frankly (don't get offended), but your example is a perfect illustration of how it's a waste of our (the customer's) time, and purely for your (the retailer's) benefit. I don't care what aisle placement allows a given product to "sell best". That's a retailers goal.
I care about finding products (all of them, not just the ones that the retailer is trying to move off the shelves), and not wasting my time trying to figure out where the idiot store manager moved something just because he needs to jump through hoops to justify his wage, and/or try to move a little more product.
But in all likelihood, a pen & paper would be your best friend,
Aaah. The truth comes out. You're a luddite. You're the voice of the "unfrozen caveman shopper". It's as if you're just going on about "your strange and confusing blinky lights and automation products anger me!"

It's probably a reality if a developer wanted to make it one. It would probably be a sizeable application, but would prove very useful. I know that when I toy around with a few on my computer, they just don't seem that useful unless I was somehow disabled.
However, on a mobile device it could prove more useful due to the fact that you don't need some big clunky machine in front of you. The mobile device (G1 at this point), could almost act as a personal memo machine, and could be scaled all the way up to a full on text-by-voice entry machine.

On a lighter note, I have an app idea that has been talked about elsewhere on the forum. A user asked if the G1 was able to switch between 2G and 3G networks. Another user confirmed that this was possible with the G1.
I propose an app to very quickly switch between the 2 networks. Something like a long press on a physical button somewhere on the device. This could function similarly to a laptop being able to flip a physical switch to alternate GPUs.
That way, when I'm emailing, calendaring, contacting, calling, etc...I can use 2G. 3G really isn't necessary, and goes unnoticed. But when I want to YouTube and DL apps I can long press a button and turn my 3G on.
meh?

Here's a few ideas for some basic apps, nothing crazy, we'll get to those ideas later. ;)
-I definitely think the G1 needs a better AIM client. One that runs over data and not sms is a must. I think if it could show the status of what you're listening to on your music player (like ichat to itunes) would be rad. Also, so you can have custom msgs (available or away msgs). I also like how on gmail you can see the android to know the person is on a G1. The sidekick does this so you know the user is on a sidekick, and I. Like having that. The sidekick, btw, has an awesome AIM client.
-Also, I think the G1 definitely needs an auto text feature and possibly a spell check feature.
-The ability to create several highly customizable sound profiles so that you can have a maximum profile, normal, vibrate, silent, etc and customize the "phone settings", "messaging settings","alert settings" etc individually. For example, I used to have a setting that would have the msging settings go silent at a certain time, but keep the phone volume on.
A Notepad, to do list, unit converter, etc.
Well that my 2 cents. Like I said, just basic ideas, but I think they're necessities.
Ideass for crazy apps to come!

-Notepad
-Owner name and contact number on the lockout screen, in case the phone is misplaced
-Organization system for the main drawer. Too many apps, and they're all mixed in together. Could be folders, could just be titled divider bars.
-More customization options overall, specifically sound and haptic feedback. The phone does the pseudo-click thing when you pick up an icon on the home screen, I want it to do that when I'm dialing, too.
-An electronic compass. Granted, it's kind of outdated with the GPS on it, but I want a shiny electronic compass, darn it. The phone has the hardware built in, why not make it visible?
-More central clock options. Different styles, including digital. The alarm clock has cool clock faces, but they don't carry over to the home screen.
-An easier way to get battery percentage readout.
-Positional sensing like the Iphone, so when you flip the phone sideways, you get widescreen aspect ratio, regardless of whether or not the keyboard is open.
-Bookmark organization options. Can't drag and drop existing bookmarks.
-Phonebook organization options. Organizes alphabetically by first name currently, also does not support multiple names under an entry (married couples, family members, etc.)
-Take the SMS/MMS option off of non-mobile phone numbers. My home phone doesn't take text messages.

I think that this is a great idea. Automatic call screening. I've wanted that ability for a long time. Sometimes my phone rings off the hook. Recently I was shopping around to buy a new car and was applying for loans. My phone was ringing off the hook for weeks. Then you have advertisers, head hunters, bill collectors, call boxes, stalkers, relatives...
I'd take this idea one step further and add a white list feature. For example, when a new call comes in, if the caller's caller-ID isn't in my phone book, the call could be silently sent straight to voice mail. Or a call-group could be checked. Of course a simple black-list feature would still be good. Whenever a call was ignored a notification could be entered, or a log could be updated.
My desire for this feature is one of the main reasons that I bought a G1. With an open source phone I am definitely going to try writing a better phone app (assuming that no one else does it first) .

I will pay $100 to the person who can create an application described below:
My idea is called "the switch"
It is a one button (icon) that, when pressed activates and or deactivates functions.
For instance... when I am at work, and want to conserve my battery, I need to do the following:
Shut off wifi, 3G, GPS, lower screen brightness, lower volume, and keep the vibration on.
If there was an app where I could configure these sorts of things to happen with the flip of a "switch" Id be golden.
I could also use it to turn certain things back on... like a switch for when I am in noisy areas like train stations.. this switch would: turn up the ringe volume all the way up, turn on the vibration (if it were already on no effect), change the ringtone to something else, and perhaps activate bluetooth (in ear ringing is nice!) :)
Can anyone grasp my idea?
I'd also like a short cut to flip the orientation of the browser when I wanted without opening the KB or hitting the menu button, scrolling for the "Flip Orientation" and then scroll and read at will. I have tried to do this with Anycut, but no go.
It would be nice to assign this function to the camera button, since I rarely use it to activate the cam anyway... I usually just open the menu and select it from there.
So, if these ideas are possible, and someone wants $100 - I know its not a fortune, but I feel the community of users could benefit. Get in touch - I will pay when the app is up and working in the Marketplace :) or when I can demo a working beta version.

What about the option to play a recorded message saying "Its not you its me, but really its you I'm just trying to be nice" for exs. and "Please remove me from your call list" for telemarketers.
So when you get a call you could just push a button and it would play them the message, you simply hang up at that point and the call would automatically end once the message is finished.
Also an option to add contacts you don't want to hear from so when they call you see nothing, but maybe a silent notification that says they tried calling.
Also the ability to set your phone to auto answer with custom voice mail away messages "Sorry i missed your call but I'm in a meeting/at the movies/seeing your gf, I'll be avalable after xx:xx to leave me a message press 1 now"
It would be such a handy tool for pretty much anyone.

I mean think of how many false emails, or crap web stories, or even tv/news stories you may or may not have gotten or read about various political candidates (of all parties), cars running on water, "miracle cures", and what have you.
Just an app to help foster critical thinking in an unbiased manner.
Of course, for some reason, critical thinking seems to be something that many people assume is only for the intellectual elite or something....

I'm a longtime sidekick user, and just switched over to the G1... so some sidekick-type apps (such as Notes) would be nice.. i know there's Quick Lists... but just a generic note pad would be ideal.
Also... I REALLY hope someone develops a budgeting/checkbook balancing app so I can keep track of ye ol' finances ;-)
I'll cosign that.

Since i don't yet have a G1...
And i don't know the full breakdown of what's in the Market, here's my wishlist. This is a music/general nerdery post, so let me know if you don't know what i'm talking about.
Eno needs to port Bloom to the G1 (if you haven't seen this on the iPhone, or even read about it, peep it.)
An MPC style drum pad app would be sweet, something to bang out beats when you're bored.
A synth too, analog emulator, whatever....i mean the sky's the limit.
anyone else wanting to make beats or whatever on a phone?
=j=
I want that somebody make app. piano for G1. Use keyboard for make sounds and then you can create music.

Also the ability to set your phone to auto answer with custom voice mail away messages "Sorry i missed your call but I'm in a meeting/at the movies/seeing your gf, I'll be avalable after xx:xx to leave me a message press 1 now"
It would be such a handy tool for pretty much anyone.
you can do most of what you described with youmail

A more robust call log, with course (cell tower triangulation) or fine (gps) location. Also with the option to display actual number dialled (so I can compare it against my itemized phone bill), and with laptop/server/sdCard sync.
A more robust calendar app, with configurable week start day (Mon or Sun), and with laptop/server/sdCard sync.
A more robust contacts app with birthday and expanded notes fields, and with laptop/server/sdCard sync.

1 ) My first dream app is a very simple one, just a notepad where I can jot down notes. I can use a "to do" list on iGoogle but I'd rather have an actual app on the angel that was sent from above, otherwise known as my G1.
2) My second Dream app would be a video recorder. This would be great and leads me to my third dream app...
3)....A program that records video and uploads directly to YouTube
4) My fourth dream app would be an all in one eBay sellers app. It would walk you through the process of selling an item on ebay, including taking pictures of the item you are selling on your phone.
These would all make me very happy, so make it happen geniuses! ;)
BTW my girlfriend, sister, and dad all have iPhones and I think my G1 is way better than all those phones put together. I was at Macy's yesterday looking for a western shirt for my Cowboy Halloween costume and I heard a song playing at the store. I whipped out my G1 and opened Shazam and tagged the song "Going Nowhere" by Cut Copy. I downloaded the version without lyrics (the 5:26 min version) and I'm listening to it right now as I type! Just some anecdotal info on the greatness of Android!

I'd love an app that could put certain contacts in a private area. That way someone looking at your phone wouldn't be able to see all of your contacts unless they entered in a passcode or something.
BTW it looks like a Notepad needs to be developed as it is the most popular idea in this thread so far. I like a lot of the other ideas though!

Perhaps even better would be an alternate sorting method?
On my WinMo devices, I could sort my Friends, Family, Services, etc.
Currently we only have Favorites.
And the idea of the Notepad would be perfect. Add to that a simple todo list (*cough*RTM*integration*).

Here are some apps I'd like to see:
1. XM Radio widget
2. Weather Widget that was a simple Icon that showed visibly what the weather was like outside (windy, snow, raining...) and the temp. It would be tied into your current location and would update based on your travels.
3. MAME
4. Xterm
5. VNC
6. SSH
7. Text Editor
8. File Browser
9. Web Server implementation
10. A Mobile Notes App
I think for the G1 anyway:
A better video player.
A way to install to SD Card.
A file manager to look at internal (like home directory only) and Sd Card.
Tether
Real Skype client(not the bs "we go over voice data to improve quality"thing thats there now).

I recently was comparing my G1 apps to my bosses iphone apps and the one thing I really liked was an app that brings up your map and shows you gas stations in the area and it displays the prices for each different gas station. It apparently works by allowing anyone with the program to enter what prices they see around town. So if I pulled into a gas station and regular was 2.50$ a gallon, I could enter that info and everybody else would see the change I made.
I hope that makes sense to everyone.
This app would be very helpful to me and many others!

I'm already working on a finance app. It uses buxfer.com (http://www.buxfer.com) to automatically update your account info so that you don't have to go download the data yourself. It lets you log manual transactions like uncleared checks, tag transactions, and view charts of expenses. Screens here (http://plaguester.blogspot.com).
As for apps I'd like to see:
- Chat app that uses data network rather than SMS.
- NES or SNES Emulator
- A real task manager (close open programs).
I can't believe that there's not a notes app out already. Google's own tutorial for the SDK is a notepad app. Maybe I should go flesh it out with a few features and publish it.

A good Zmud client. Theres been tons of tims I wish I could mud.
Etch-a-Sketch program using the trackball and then shaking the thing to erase.
PDF viewer that would be as simply as clicking and dragging a pdf to my SDcard and reading it on the phone. Preferably with a zoom function like the chrome browser.
The ability to read webpages stored on the SDcard with the browser. I do my own html at times and being able to view and edit would be nice.

Coming from a blackberry, I cannot believe the G1 does not have spell check for email and text messaging. How do you have an email app on a phone come without spell check? It's hard enough to write any length of text on a small device, and to have to go back and manually check whether or not your finger slipped on the tiny keyboard and misspelled a word is just a pain. Come on Google, you even offer spelling suggestions on your search results!

I'd say definitely some sort of Streaming Flash player plug-in to totally use the 3g to its capacity. I'm sure it's a popular request any how....and I'm sure it's in the works by a ton of developers:D

OK here's my list:
TOOLS-Both command line like ifconfig, and graphical like Advanced IP Scanner. Ping is there, the syntax is just a little odd.
Clients - VPN, RDP, telnet, VNC and so on.
Netstumbler
An app that lets me 'capture' my G1 on my laptop. When synced I would have my G1 emulated on my laptop and be able to maneuver around and enter/edit data through the larger screen.
Better Sync- If there is going to be no desktop sync then Google needs to improve the ability to sync from the desktop to Google then to the G1.
Unified messaging client- All of my clients with a blackberry spend their day there. Shouldn't matter if it's an Email, SMS or chat.
Payment Via Phone - Paypal maybe? But the ability to 'load' an amount on the phone that I could use for purchasing either in person - retail - or on-line.
I can think of lots of other App's - Vista MCE extensions or Linux MCE orbiters would be great!

Lost In Space
The saddest thing ever is to be parted from a dear friend unexpectedly, one moment your trusty ANDROID is by your side speeding through the countryside or sharing a few moments of free wifi at a coffee bar - a blink of an eye or a distraction and your suddenly you find yourself completely alone.
I LOST MY ANDROID® ™
with I lost My Android you can log onto your Google Gmail at any PC and activate I LOST MY ANDROID application.
This will send a message to your ANDROID that Locks your ANDROID DOWN and displays a LOST ANDROID screen that cannot be bypassed by the phones finder.
The Lost Android screen will have Your Alternate Telephone Number and email address - and perhaps a network incentive to return the device to you.
I LOST MY ANDROID will also use any available route to transmit its location back to your GMAIL Account
:)
Now I just need a developer
I remember seeing an App during the Android Developer Challenge that did just this. Their application had additional features to assist in the locating process (maps, tracking, etc). Check it out: Lost Android https://www.lostandroid.com/

An app which use the accelamometer to detemine if the G1 has been sitting still for a period of time - user configurable.
If it still, it shuts off services such as wifi, G3, bluetooth, gps to save battery. My gps logger does this. Different from locale, because if I set it down on my desk for a while, it would basically shut a bunch of stuff off.
Upon motion it restores to the prior state. Or upon use - again a user selectable option. So if I take it off my desk and stick it in my pocket it would stay in the "low power" state if I chose that option.
And if it was plugged in I could choose if it would fall to the lower power state. Kind of like the power settings on a laptop.

I consider this the "holy grail" of mobile apps. I would like to stream music from my collection on my home PC to my G1. Why store music locally on the device when I can just play it from home? No matter where I go, I'll have full access to my 50GB music collection.

OK I am not a programmer but this is what I want-
Off road trail maps downloaded to the SD card, so you don't have to update map with no signal.
Name of trip- grab the map you want and it saves to a new file on SD card for that trip, so the original map is still there.
Then under trip support for GPS, and photo tagging(like maybe just a camera button in app that auto stores your location and lets you take a pic, then takes you back to the map).
digital compass overlay on map, and maybe something like the Bubble app with a calibrate button, so you can see how off level you are(with maybe settable warnings for danger tipping points)
this is allot to fit on one screen and be able to see while driving so I was thinking that like the home screen that can be dragged over left and right, that the center would be map gps compass info, to the left would be the camera tagging stuff like thumb nail of photos taken on trip and location and the button to go to camera, and to the right the tilt on car truck with maybe another compass overlay and calibrate button (that way when you hit a climb or drop off on the trail all you have to do is slide to the right to see if you are going to tip over)
A setting for no screen time out or diming if power is pluged in.
then the ability to share the trip to others that way you can go out and EXPLORE and share or look up your faverate trial and see were others are going to have fun.
Thank you for your time reading this long post like I siad I am not a proggamer but I know what I want so hope this gets some good responce here I am on a few off road forums and they are holding there breth to see what happens. :D
Thanks again Daniel

Hey I am not sure if this is posted (too many to read) or in the process of making but it would be cool and I have been begging for this the GPS too say the directions out loud. Like the blackberry would tell you step by step where to go without ever having to look at the phone. Also the G1 should have an application that when a song is playing on the radio or some where, you put the phone to listen to the song and in like 1 or 2 mins it will find the song and it will tell you the song title, artist, album name, etc. Oh yeah it also needs an application for a touch screen keyboard.. So when I want to type ok or bye I won't have to open my phone to do that I can just do it right then and there..

They first have to make turn-by-turn direction capability for the phone. Then we can then complain about no voice~turn-by-turn directions.

This is great for meetings since I don't have to put the phone on silent, I just felt the vibe and casually reach and press the mute button.
Of course, the BlackBerry also had a magnetic holster so it you could also customize this by whether it was in the holster or out, but I don't know that the G1 has such a feature.

However, the camera functions suck! Only has auto-focus. I want zoom 2x to at least 4x, crop, rotate, hue, color, etc. ANNND the option to save all photos/videos to microSD.

The alarm that comes with the G1 is horrible, I like to wake to music not to 6 different variations of buzzs and beeps.

Ok, I do not know about the rest of you, but I am frankly tired of the "Unidentified" calls and then of course the calls that you do not want to accept, such as old girlfriends etc and they continue to contact you. Most cell phones do not have the option to block a number from contacting you. I would love the ability to block certain numbers, unidentified or anonymous numbers and only take the calls I desire to take!
it does not help with the anon or unidentified calls, but when a salesman calls me with a valid number, I save it as a nonsense name that starts with Z (Zxfetso, zz9lse, zzquthe, etc) and give it a skull and crossbones picture and silent ringtone.
I have been doing this for years and it works well enough. The constant flow of missed calls from zzxy... is somewhat amusing.
Definitely would like a block caller app though though.

I'd really like to see some sort of Midi music composer for Android. I think it would be fun for killing time to have a program with, say, 10-20 various instrument sounds loaded in, a percussion kit, maybe 4 tracks or so, and a timeline. The app would allow you to choose the instrument for each track, add/remove/edit notes at any point in the timeline, and basically create very primitive (or possibly advanced, depending on the depth/quality of the app/composer) music files.
Then, naturally, you would be given the option to save your "songs" to the memory card, and be given the choice of setting them as your current ringtone.
I would love to see this app mainly for the fact that it would be a fun time-killer, but also because I've been looking for a program that I could compose my own ringtones with.
Maybe something like this already exists, but if not, I hope they make it soon.
how about a programming interface on the android. where you can make your own widgets or make a simple application for android.
this is a rather funny or maybe cruel app
how about an iphone killer app i mean literally kill an iphone. hehe, lol.

I'm new to the smartphone pool so I don't really care about increasing functionality at this point. The phone works for me right now. The apps that would make my life complete, however, are a lightsaber and a zippo. If someone can get to work on those you can have my first born.;)

One easy app would be an alarm that would alert you when your battery reaches a level that you set. Alert should be a mix of methods: sound, vib, both.

My app idea is quite simply...
...an app to let you write to google notes, google docs, and google spreadsheets.
Is that too much to ask for? :)

Star gazer app. Point your phone at the night sky then pan around. The star gazer app shows you names of stars, constellations, planets etc. Find a planet then zoom all the way in for a close up and more facts and figures.
I guess you would need GPS, internet, gyroscope, time/date and an internet connection for this to work.
How awesome would that be?

I like your thinking but wouldn't that just decrease the little battery life you have left quicker?
Maybe just a bit more subtle but have the indicator light flash a different colour?

I usually have my bluetooth off to save battery, and only need it on for when I'm driving. An app to automatically turn on/off the bluetooth based on whether I'm in my car would be great. It's almost like locale, but to accurately determine if I'm in my car and need bluetooth on, I think speed is the best indicator.
I want an app to monitor the accelerometer, when I start to go faster than 5 miles/hr, turn on the bluetooth so the phone will pair with my car's bluetooth. Once the connection to the car is lost, assume that the car has been turned off, it should turn off the bluetooth.

Check this idea out:
A program that lets you select several sounds that could randomly (or not randomly) switch your notification sound every time... so I don't have to hear the same one every damn time i get a text.

Hmmm....try www.youmail.com. its free...you can set up custom messages based on the number thats calling, and you can even set up "ditch mail" where it play a greeting then disconnects not giving the caller the option to leave a message.

Get me out of here! a.k.a. Fake Phone Call - a one touch application that would launch a fake incoming phone call from a preset contact in a preset amount of time. Caller ID, contact picture and name would come up on screen for added reality. Useful for ditching a boring conversation without seeming too rude.
"Damn, it's work, I better take this!"
If one exists, someone please point me to it. ;)

it does not help with the anon or unidentified calls, but when a salesman calls me with a valid number, I save it as a nonsense name that starts with Z (Zxfetso, zz9lse, zzquthe, etc) and give it a skull and crossbones picture and silent ringtone.
I have been doing this for years and it works well enough. The constant flow of missed calls from zzxy... is somewhat amusing.
Definitely would like a block caller app though though.
theres an option under your contacts to send the calls of someone directly to your voicemail. you just have to save the contact and under edit contacts theres that option

The notepad app is out there now, and it's called G-Notepad :)
it took me 4 hours to develop :)
I don't have a G1, so please someone post here the comments the users are putting on the market .. i can't see them without the phone itself.
Also, if you have suggestions, feel free to post them here, or as pm

My top pick for an app. Another option could be to select certain area codes/exchanges so you could block 800 numbers etc.
Especially useful would be a simple "block this number" button when anyone calls.
Can't wait for something lik
