My official full upgrade date is Oct 20th, but I was approved to get the full upgrade rate on any phone right now.
So, I wanted to get the G1 on the 22nd. Since I don't have 3G here, yet, I would have to order it online/over the phone. I called and they said that for the pre-order, they can't "fix" the price to $179 over the phone. HOWEVER, they said once I received the bill with the $299 charge on it, to call and they will credit my account the $120!
Great news for me!
I went with black, after all, because the keyboard on the brown was silver-ish. That was a deal breaker.:p

Cool!
I'd do the same but I'm just afraid of how terribly slow it'll be without the 3G network.
So. Yeah.

The rumor is that St. Louis will have 3G around the end of 1Q09. Plus, I'm so used to the slowness that I have now, that it's not that big of a deal.

Two questions then.
I live about 35 miles from the Birmingham market, will I be getting 3G if I am in the next county? Or is it pretty exclusive to just that one city?
Also, what kind of speeds can we expect without 3G for browser?

Speeds are pretty slow. Probably a little better than dialup. Especially for heavy content. Dilbert.com takes my Dash about 4-5 minutes to load (it's blocked at work, so I have to get my comic fix through my phone).
From what I understand, you're too far, but don't take my word for it.

So can you clarify something to me.
How come Blackberry's browser is faster than that without 3G?

I'm not sure. I've never messed with a BB. My wife has one, but that's about all I know about them. I may be overreacting a bit, but it's still rather slow.

Oh, ok. I am assuming they run off the same internet? EDGE through T-Mobile?
I will agree it's not fast or anything, but it's ok, I could put up with it anyway, plus WiFi is a plus for loading faster.

Agreed. Of course, my house probably won't get 3G, even when it does get here. I live in Warrenton. Well, at least I'll have decent speeds when I go to sites at work that are blocked by the firewall. :P

Warrenton, eh..? Im in South City.
Yea I guess the fact that we'll have wireless access takes the sting off the 3G coverage for a while.. but shit the end of 1Q09 is sooo far away...

The store at the Mills told me that STL is a #23 in terms of priority. Sounds like that's pretty far down the list.
I work in Hazelwood, though. So that should get the coverage. The home Wifi will help. I'm sure I'll be too engrossed in the G1 to pick up the laptop much (except to start building Android apps).
The week of 10/20-10/26 is like Christmas in October for me:
10/21: Fable 2 for XBox
10/22: G1
10/24: Blues "Pink at the Rink" game
10/25: First Blues game of 5 games I have tickets for.

I had already called before they approved this and they told me that I could qualify for the full upgrade discount on any other phone. When I called about the refund, they said just call when the bill comes in with the $299.
I might try to get them to wave the $18 upgrade fee, too. :p
