I'm sure there's a way of hiding the promotions stuff from the inbox.
(I have never seen one, but I also almost never use a browser for Gmail and never use the Gmail app. If these things started impinging on me, i.e. coming to my attention at all, I'd stop using the Gmail address completely - it's not as if I don't have others).
I never see such ads neither in Chrome on Windows 10, nor in Mailplane on macOS, nor in the GMail app on Android, nor in the GMail app on my wife's iPhone. So there must be a way to remove them, though I can't remember what I did to get rid of them (or, in fact, whether I actually did anything at all).
Same here, mostly because I accidently set it up only for here. Of "promotions" - sometimes with the moto sales, but that is to give my attention to other products they sell.
If you still want the promotions, but not the ads, then at the bottom of the settings page that @Dannydet indicated, keep promotions checked but uncheck enable bundling of top email. Personally I have everything turned off.
