dell optiplex GX620 an upgrade... or downgrade

im thinking about using the GX620 my grandma gave me for helping her out and i was wondering if my video card and RAM would work on it and if it would even be worth it

and i have DDR2 RAM in my other PC

If you have the driver for the OS and the card has the same slot that's on the motherboard, then yes. You will be able to work this out.

As for ddr2 it depends. Read the label on the RAM that's in the machine. It must operate at the frequency that's on the sticker. You CAN go lower but don't expect great results. You CANNOT go higher.

Google the desktop model to ascertain if it has pci express 2.0 x16

Google what RAM it takes. You can even search the dell website for ram specific to your machine then note the frequency of the Ram in mhz. Then compare that to the RAM in your other machine.

This is all easy to find out with a quick compare of both machines, one machine and Google or no machines and Google.

According to HP I have pcie x16 and the dell has 2.0
(I think)
My HP has a AMD athilon x2 @ 2.2 gHz the dell rocks a Intel Pentium D @ 3.4 gHz

Ok well the link to the gfx says its pci 2.0 16 so should be good.

Is it much better than the onboard though?

Bows the HP intergrated outta the water. The dell isn't Amy better and I dual monitor so I need the card. It has a PCIe dvi card in it atm

again mine is a x2 2.2 gHz while the Pentium D (basicilly P4) is a 3.4 gHz the processor is older but faster worth it sacrifice

Pentium d is well old. Higher clock does not mean faster processing. It was Intels first attempt at dual core. The I range are infinitely better. Not sure what the other CPU is you have that's 2.2.

Ah the first dual core vs the first Intel dual core.

Depends what you're using them for. They may both run openELEC with Xbmc as a media centre. There's no way they will play HD video ontop of windows though.

Other than that, may be fine for web browsing and basic office documents

i decided to do a test throw all my stuff (lightscribe drive 3Gigs of ram and my viceo wireless and TV cards and see how it fares oh and my 500 gig HDD) im pleased with it

handiling both monitors well

Odd. Wouldn't expect it to handle that. My newer amd based sx struggles. I have to kill loads of services and processes.

What windows version? How much ram? May have to get me one of these off ebay
