I think it is something that used to put price stickers on items for sale in stores. A roll was put in there and each item was tapped. When it was tapped, a pre-gummed price sticker was affixed.

Now, with bar codes on everything, there is no longer a need.

When I was a bag boy (first summer job) the cashiers used to look at the price, tap it in on the register and send it on down to the bagger. Some of the cashiers were very quick and accurate at that. Some also knew how to through the canned goods at the bag boy's hands. It was more of a game than a cruelty.

I got $1.10 per hour for that.
