The LED, UHD, Plasma, LCD Debate

Something, something, something

tl;dr.

(just kidding, is there anything you don't know? :p)

I don't know about the fancy specs associated with TV's etc, but I should get delivery of this on Friday (if the courier is working) or Monday.

http://www.lg.com/uk/tvs/lg-47LB630V

I didn't really want a smart TV and I was looking for 50", but after playing about with it and a few Samsungs, a Panasonic and a Phillips, in store, this easily looked the best of what was in my price range. The guy even let me hook up and Xbox to it so I could see how it coped with gaming.

Specs could be better and based on what I've read in this thread, I should have probably gone with something more expensive, but like I said above, picture quality (to me anyway) was easily the best of all the TV's I messed about with.

Wait just a minute!

Are you saying that you didn't agonize over every specification and spend weeks beating up the interwebz with massive amounts of technobabble and just bought what you liked????

Why we don't need curved TVs.

http://www.flatpanelshd.com/focus.php?subaction=showfull&id=1399228517

"
It can be hard to accept that TV manufacturers will now try to sell us something that is actually a step backwards in terms of picture quality for pretty much everyone else than the one lucky person seated perfectly in front of the TV. Bad viewing angles have previously been something the industry had to fight because of the limitations of LCD technology, but now it seems that they are destroying them on purpose. At the same time some manufacturers have decided not to launch their high-end models as flat versions, which can potentially push the market in a very wrong direction.

We hope that you, the consumer, do not get dazzled by the fancy marketing campaigns and hot air sales pitches, but can see this effort for what it is: Just another attempt to promote the next “3D”. Give us back the flat screens and leave the curved ones at the CES show floors."

Here's a good write-up on what's going on with the latest quantum dot TVs, including those just announced by LG and Samsung.

http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/consumer-electronics/audiovideo/what-the-heck-are-quantum-dots

So - originally, the promise was that quantum dots would provide the individual subpixel lighting (emissive display in the article - brag alert, you can google emissive and permissive display technologies - I coined those phrases lol).

Anyway - latest quantum dots are *still* not that.

They're simply being used to replace the LCD backlighting with a better, purer white.

Which - is ok. But not what the original quantum dot promise was.

Some people are buying 4k TVs to"future-proof" their purchase. Problem is, some of these sets are not HDCP 2.2 compatible, so really aren't future-proofed at all. I think this is not common knowledge for most average consumers, so if you're looking at 4K TVs, make sure it has HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2. Most 2014 sets should have it, but double check to make sure.

Yeah I saw that. Better be a huge improvement over their previous Smart TV offerings - but I doubt it.

I'm sure that makes sense for some people but using add on devices is just so much better.

When it comes to TV's I am a Samsung fan boy, though I've never used one of their smart tvs.

But.... That Sony 4k TV just announced running Android TV though..... Damn!

Me too and I have used their Smart TV option, it's great until -

1. You compare Netflix picture quality to Chromecast (Chromecast wins).

And -

2. You live though having to deal with storage warnings during built-in app updates. At that point, you REALLY want a separate device with better app management.

Yeah, exactly! ;) :)

I didn't even think about app updates... Doh!
And I agree, give me a separate system, any separate system, for app functionality. Seems like that would be better 10 out of 10 times. Though I'm assuming Android TV will be the perfect mesh of the 2

Has anybody used bias lighting?. I bought a Samsung LCD set last month, and it's pretty nice, but the blacks can't touch even my entry-level Samsung plasma in a dark room. It's not bad with a light on. I ordered this cheap bias lighting setup:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007TG5EG8?ie=UTF8&at=&force-full-site=1&ref_=aw_bottom_links

Just a row of LEDs that you stick on the back of the TV for ambient lighting.
It's supposed to improve perceived contrast levels and reduce eye strain when watching in a dark room. It's no big loss if it sucks, but if nothing else I think it'll at least look cool. :p

What a great TV. I just had to have it. Unfortunately for me, I didn't have enough money to buy it. Then I saw an ad that offered to buy kidneys for $25,000. Well, I can only give up one kidney, but we have six kids, four of them were old enough to donate. So my wife and I took those four kids down to a clinic in Mexico and donated our kidneys. As soon as the checks cleared I clicked BUY NOW and within a few days we had our new TV!

Totally epic
