What do you call a sandwich which comes on a 6 to 24 inch roll?

In my part of Boston Massachusetts we call them Subs; short for Submarine Sandwiches. There was one particular shop in Roxbury MA called Spinalle's where they were called Spukies for some reason. What do you call those sandwiches in your part of the world?

Here in NY, subs have a connotation that you are going to Subway for a sandwich. However, you would say hero for any other type of eatery.

[RANT] I blame this on Subway and Jared. Whatever happened to those colorful regional names for Submarine sandwiches? Nobody says Torpedo anymore, Spukies went out with the closure of that sandwich shop I mentioned in the OP. I think the whole world is becoming homogenized by mass marketing. Subway has 39,247 store in 102 countries. Subway even has a Facebook page for goodness sake. [/RANT]

That was funny! What do you think dreadnatty08; should I start a new thread or redirect this one to names for types of pizzas? When I was visiting a friend in Virginia he suggested we get a Garbage Pizza. That threw me for a loop until he explained it was a pizza with literally everything the store had to offer on it.

The restaurant I work at (well, I got one day left....) is called Pete's New Haven Style Apizza in homage to how they pronounce it in New Haven. They say a-beats instead of pizza.

Where I grew up in the Philly area it's a hoagie. A toasted hoagie is a grinder. Another variation that was local to my corner of the Philly 'burbs is the zep. Where I live now in Texas you can get po' boys.

I live in Georgia as well and have always called them subs/sub sandwich.

In Sydney they were always bread rolls/long rolls until Subway came to town. Nonetheless if you go into a sandwich shop you'll be asking for a roll or long roll (we have round rolls too, that aren't sweetened like hamburger buns are).

When I lived near Rochester, NY and on Long Island they were called a Hero. In North West PA and in Eastern, PA they are called hoagies. And like cjr72 said, toasted versions are called Grinders.
