Help Audio playback performance issues

Greetings, it seems I can't play properly aac(.m4a) audio files on my device on any player which uses built-in payback engine. Different formats seem play properly. Audio players which use own audio decoder play properly all audio formats including aac. Also aac format is played fine as ringtone or audio notification. The problem arises only when playing back m4a files eg. in default music player. I'm on custom ROM based on Nougat 7.1.2 and hadn't this issue on any previous OS (not absolutely sure if OS related but looks.. so). The problem isn't actually I can't play these files at all, but the playback is terribly laggy, playback position skips back and forth and overall phone response is really bad during playback. Can I get some clue what's going on and how to resolve, thanks.
