Root How to root Optimus Zip

Figured I would pass this along to those wanting to root the Zip. After digging around a bit I came across this post for the ST Hauwei Ascend 2 root method, which I've heard reports it also works for the Zip. After following the steps indicated, I successfully managed to root my phone and am one happy camper now. :D
Many thanks goes to The MC for providing the instructions for the Ascend 2 and giantpune for providing the poot.apk method.

If you are like me you have been searching for a way to root the Huawei Ascend ii for Tracfone / Straight Talk networks. Well my friends, wait no longer, thanks to the genius of giantpune. His exploit also works on the M865c.
Here is the link to his original thread.
Note: While this method should not cause any damage to your phone, I cannot be held responsible for any damages incurred. By rooting your phone you are taking full responsibility for any changes you make.

Step 1:
Download the Poot.apk and place it somewhere on you phone, internal storage or sd card, either will work.
Download Poot-debug.apk from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way
(This is the One Touch 910 /ARM5 link on giantpune's thread)

Step 2:
Download the ministro-ii.apk and place it somewhere on your phone.
http://androidforums.com/attachments/elite-all-things-root/38892d1346912490-optimus-elite-root-apk-ministro-ii.apk
(Again, this is a link from giantpune's thread.)

Step 3:
Install both the Poot.apk and ministro-ii.apk. (You will need to make sure that you have enabled "Unknown Sources" under the application settings menu of your phone before you will be able to install these apks.)

Step 4:
After both apks are installed open Poot. It will open up ministro and download quite a few libraries that are necessary for the Poot to work. Once it has completed click the button that says "Press here to poot" and hope for the best.

Step 5:
Pay attention the the messages displayed on the screen. Most messages should start with a [+], but you should see a couple of [-].
As long as the only warning messages you receive are the following, you should have successfully rooted.

[-]current && current != last + 1: 0000ffff 0000ffff
[-]Haxx has run its coarse. Reboot the device to play again
A demon materialized while pooting. Error code: 64

You will receive these messages because Poot does not recognize the M865c kernel and is unable to clean things up without rebooting.
Again, the three warnings listed above are nothing to worry about.

Step 6:
Reboot your phone to save changes and allow the exploit to take effect.

Step 7:
Open Poot and click on the button that says Built-in rootcheck to verify that your phone is rooted. As long as Poot is able to find 'su,' and it will display its path along with a corresponding message stating success.

Step 8:
Install the superuser app from the google play store. This app is necessary to run other apps as root.

Step 9:
You can now uninstall Poot and ministro, if you like. This should save you a little bit of space since the M865c has limited internal storage.

Step 10:
Thank giantpune for all of his work and consider donating to him because he did all of the work on this. I am only detailing my experience, he deserves all of the credit.

Pardon my ignorance but what benefits does one derive after rooting the LG Optimus Zip?
Does it allow one to update the OS from its present, ancient 2.3.4 (Gingerbread) to Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean?
You also say "I've heard reports it also works for the Zip."
- Has anyone here actually, successfully done this?

One of the main benefits to rooting is being able to use an app such as link2sd to move apps to your SD card to free up the otherwise limited internal memory. As far as updating to ICS or JB, I'm not sure the hardware would support it, though given time, I'm sure someone would come out with a custom ROM that would give similar ICS or JB features.

Hey there, I'm very new to trying to do any of this, a 'babe in the woods.' And I ran into a problem; when I try to open Poot and Ministro and save to my desk top on Mac, it won't open via Safari. Says, "has no application able to open download." So been trying Firefox, and nothing is happening there either. I'm going off of what you posted above and then this info (and some of his other videos too): youtube/yigptXaTkCA If anybody has anything on this I'd really appreciate it. Please talk baby-talk computer speak to me (the A,B,C's) as I've never done anything like this before.

It does work on the zip. We have three of them in my family and it worked on each of them. Major improvement to this phone.

Ok... I just installed supersu and according to it the phone is not rooted.. but superuser allowed supersu to have root access.... would this be possible if the phone wasnt rooted?

the messages in poot are

path is "/sbin:/vendor/bin:/system/sbin:/system/bin:/system/xbin"

found "/system/bin/su"
Irwxrwxrwx root root 2013-11-23 16:30 su

found "/system/xbin/su"
-rwsr-sr-x root root 380532 2013-11-23 16:02 su

"/system/bin" is the first su found
The su that is being used is not /system/xbin as expected.

does this mean it is rooted or not ??? anyone???

It should work just fine as it is in /system/bin. Best way to know for sure is to download an app that requires root (like titanium backup or Link2SD) to see if you get the pop-up from superuser/SuperSU requesting root access for the app.

yes I understood that and that method worked on mine also... now that it is rooted I want to try to upgrade to a newer version of android.... IC or something... I hate 2.3.4... a custom rom would be better but I dont have a clue how and little info is out there.. so what do I need to do to upgrade it?

Yeah right now there are no custom roms anywhere for this phone, but I will be working on trying to do a port of a rom that was made for the Optimus Q when I get a chance to. As far as upgrading to ICS, it may be possible but it would end up having to be a stripped down version of it as the Zip's internal memory is rather small.
