does anyone know where i can get the exploits.zip file mentioned in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009969
or if anyone downloaded the file while the site was still up could you send the file to me?
ive been search for a while now but everything just directs me to multiupload.

ive been having a frustrating time trying to root my htc thunderbolt. ive tried unlocking the bootloader with the instructions at devhtc.com but i always get <waiting for device> when i type fastboot oem get_identifier_token.
so if anyone knows an easier way to root the thunderbolt i am open to suggestions.

Your never going to unlock a Verizon phone via HTCdev.com - and as I recall, the exploit.zip method was made obsolete a while ago.

Try http://revolutionary.io and see if that works for you - there's an hboot version restriction but otherwise it's pretty straightforward as memory serves - I used it for another HTC back in 2011, it went pretty quickly.

Best luck!

i tried to use the thunderbolt tool but it was never able to download the downgradebypass.zip
i was finally able to unlock the bootloader with the instructions at htcdev.com, apperantly you cant unlock the bootloader if your using 32bit windows.
Ah - must have been a driver issue, I've used 32-bit Windows before.

Anyway, glad you got it sorted.

I'm going to toss out my opinions, you do as you think best.

If it were me, I'd get the last maintained TWRP from here -

http://dl.twrp.me/mecha/twrp-2.6.3.0-mecha.img

You can cross check that's for your phone - http://teamw.in/devices/htcthunderbolt.html

Put it in the same folder as your fastboot, and open a command window there (this you know by virtue of achieving the unlock).

Put your phone into FASTBOOT USB mode (volume down while powering on) (if it doesn't say FASTBOOT at the top, follow the menu, go to FASTBOOT) - and plug in to PC USB 2 port (same one used to unlock) - in fact, same process you used to get to FASTBOOT USB for the unlock lol.

In the command window say -

fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.6.3.0-mecha.img

(PRO TIP - you can copy that from here and paste into the command window by tapping the command window, ALT+space for menu, E for edit, and paste from there.)

Then on the phone, go into recovery (via the hboot menu) and - DO A NANDROID BACKUP OF YOUR STOCK SETUP.

TWRP may ask you if you'd like to root by installing superuser - decline it.

Get this on to your sd card -

https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip

TWRP may allow you to do that while still in recovery.

Install the UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip from TWRP, then WIPE, Advanced, clear cache and Dalvik - and profit.

^ Optionally, if you've selected a rooted rom to go with, install that instead of SuperSU.

Anyway - congrats on the unlock, wish I could have helped make that easier lol - but hey - you had someone to talk to while you worked on it so you had that going for ya! :D

alright i have another question really quick.
why is it so hard to flash roms on this phone?
ive tried like 10 roms and have only once succeeded. is there something im doing wrong?
ive been installing them like a do for all my phones: factory reset, wipe cache, wipe delvik cache, then flash the rom.
is there a kernal or something im supposed to install before i install?

If it won't boot after flashing then it wasn't built with a boot.img installer that's improved for s-on. That's a later trick so no surprise.

Typically when you unzip a rom on your pc you'll find a file named boot.img - extract that, and place in same folder as fastboot.

After flash and boot failure, put phone into FASTBOOT USB mode and open command window to fastboot folder on pc. Say -

fastboot flash boot boot.img

Remember to not mix and match roms and boot.img files or you'll bootloop.

No big deal because the above fixes it.

Unless you're trying to describe a different problem, there you go. :)
