Samsung galaxy note 10.1

I have had this tablet for a few years now and this is the first time it has downloaded an update, but I am not sure if to install it or not as it doesn't state what the update is.
It's 63.55mb in size.

Is this the original note or the 2014 edition? I have the latter and am on the final release which is 5.1.1

Not sure, how can I tell? Looking at the about section it says sm-p900
Android version 5.0.2
It's the 12 inch version although the screen says 10.1. Ah it also says 2014 edition on the front screen I have just noticed.

That's Samsung for you ... I sometimes think they have a whole department in charge of confusing names and model numbers.

Okay, I have the SM-P600 which is the 10" version of yours, but pretty much the same thing. While there is no easy way to determine what the update is, I just looked up the firmware on Sammobile and it looks like your tablet stopped at 5.02. I'd have to think the the update, because of its size and that there are no more system updates, is a security patch. Odd that it would come through now. Is your tablet 4G or wifi-only? It might be a security patch pushed out by your carrier.

If you haven't rooted the tablet and the update shows the default Samsung notification, then I'd guess you're probably safe to apply it.

The tablet isn't rooted and is wifi only. How can you tell if it's a default samsung notification?

Pull down the notification bar and long-press that specific notification. It will tell you which app is responsible for it.

Hmmm, not sure about that one. Those numbers look like a kernel version. If you go to menu>settings>general tab>about phone>software updates does it say there are pending updates there?

It just has 2 lines
Update now last checked on 14/3

Auto update, check for updates automatically (is ticked)
The app in question has about 4 pages of access rights and seems to be able to alter lots of things

Do you know which app it is?

Have you sideloaded any apps from outside the play store? Sounds like something is pulling an update from a remote server somewhere.

No everything I have downloaded has come from the play store as far as I am aware.

Looking at the app info, the force stop and disable buttons are disabled as is move to SD card and clear data (using the hold press method you suggested)

I found another thread on a malware forum with the same issue but no more info really, although that was a phone not a tablet.

Okay, the number is the version of the software updater app, not the update itself. And, those permissions are for the updater app, not what they are granting to the update patch.

I'd have to agree with the rep from malwarebytes. It looks like a Samsung update.

Yes the basic gist of the permission log is the same as is the icon and other data, the only obvious difference is the total size, mine is 6.27MB and the data is 3.7mb.
Ok thanks, I will double check with Samsung to be sure.
