Sim card and Activation

I got an Honor 5x along with a Cricket sim card. I haven't tried to activate it yet and port my present number but I did stick the sim card in. I now read that you are not supposed to install the sim until after activation. Is this meant to mean that it shouldn't be in there during activation or that it never should have been in there prior to activation?

I called Support and was told that it isn't a problem, just take it out prior to activation.
