I'm so old that I remember when my parents broke down and purchased a record player for my sister and I that would play 45's. The record player we had prior was a piece of furniture/entertainment center that had a radio and a record player. It only played 78's and 33 1/3 records. Yes, we actually sat around of an evening and listened to radio shows. My parents had a sizable collection of Edison records and they had a wind up Edison player as well.
