Let's face it: the height of Android excitement is behind us. The smartphone market has matured. New Android announcements just don't hit like they used to... and that's okay. Android will always have a special place in our heart, but as technology enthusiasts, we want and need more.

I'm proposing that we rename Android Forums to The Daily Net, reincarnating our beloved site into a broader community for Tech Enthusiasts. The Daily Net sounds somewhat like an official news source, and that's great- "citizen journalism" on social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit have become the world's most valuable and popular source of content.

"The" is us, as a community, driving the conversation conversation.
"Daily" suggests there's always a reason to come back and see What's New.
"Net" gives a tech-centric community network vibe.

We'll still need to figure out how to organize the site and prioritize tech help and support, something on which we've historically thrived.

Desperately want to keep Android Forums? Let me know!
Have your own idea for a new name? Submit it as a suggestion!

I've also considered using subdomain "THE" so the forum would be at:
    the.daily.net

With the main (wordpress) site at daily.net

Looks cool but probably too confusing for users.

After reading my own lists above, I kind of like the look of /forums and /post more than subdomains. Hmmmmm....

Techfans makes more sense to me. Daily anything sounds like a horoscope/gossipy news place and something not related to anyplace I'd go, I'd skip right over it or not click it in a search. That's just me though and I'm sticking around and will bookmark it and never type it anyway but...

My preference would be to keep the AndroidForums name.
But if there's push by the site admins to make this site into more a generic topic site and minimize the Android help aspect, that will be a really interesting move.
I tend to think AndroidForums is a good domain name identifier, while a less specific name like Daily.net will just blend into the mix of all the other competing sites. Of course there's a chance Daily.net will catch on as standout, but I think that name won't be able to make it into an online source with its own individuality from the crowd.

For those of us that have been here since near the beginning of this site I think we all know it's time to move on from the AF name and broaden our horizons.
I'll give you that but Daily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley? I just can't with the daily thing :)

I'm am not at all a fan of Daily anything. To me it advocates some regiment, habit, or addiction. I would not click on something daily or daily anything on purpose. It even seems a bit spammy to me. It's a fantastic name for something that is daily but has zero traction to someone in search of some assistance. There is a dire need to expand on our horizon and remain relevant in the progression of the net.. I wish I could come up with something that would draw a larger active member base. There has to be a domain that isn't taken that has appeal and capitulates what we are and where we are going.

As a side note: I think it's out of respect for his steadfast contributors that Rob threw this out for discussion. I highly respect him for that and I hope we can help him.

I believe the thing that confuse a lot of people is the virtual zero difference in their minds between the "daily" and "thedaily" domains. I know you're really smitten with that domain name, @Rob but I'm concerned that a whole lot of people will instinctively type www.daily.net... a news site completely unrelated to our content. More than a couple of tries and a lot of potential traffic will just give up (especially in our microwave, "I want it now and don't expect me to put any thought into it" society). We could have one of the best-formatted, most impeccably organized sites on the internet: but if no one visits it...

    o_O

    www.phonehelp.com IS available...

I would also like to add the following facts. Years ago I took over moderation of a number of forums for Rob. They were all once quite active and had a solid membership base and new members looking for help or insight. As I cleaned them up it was quite sad to see each forum slowly dry up and die. They were all narrow interest forums and as the traffic declined, so did the active members. As time passed there was less and less traffic until there were only a couple of members left standing. Finally they gave up and the forum was basically dead. Rob knows what he is doing. We've got to diversify or we'll see the same fate. Android phones and OS is not the hot topic it once was. Expansion is survival. All we need is that magnet domain name.

In that case: Perhaps a merger with forums.androidcentral.com is in order.

Edit: Or maybe not. I registered with that site yesterday, and today, I found that I was banned for spam evening though I hadn't posted anything to that forum!

I belong to a couple of sites that are struggling with membership numbers.

Both started out as satellite tv hacking sites and that hobby has been long gone and the sites did nothing to keep membership so alas, the membership is long gone.

People want something to see, hear, or get for free, I think this place has great intel on all platforms of phones, shame to throw the name away trying to attract other interest when there is no other interest to offer.

I admin at a free wares site that was once booming and now even it is down in numbers ... The Chief is right about the I want it now generation ...

I just keep being reminded of New Coke. For those too young to know, in the 1980s, Coca-Cola changed from their iconic 'classic' formula to a new one that tasted quite different. It backfired to say the least (with many claiming it tasted like Pepsi, causing tons to think they merged among other crazy theories) and the whole New Coke option fizzled out.

the i want it now generation

Great, now that Queen song is in my head. again.

Preventive ban hammer! See? AI knew you would eventually break the terms g conditions, so it preemptively gave you the boot!
More likely, I used a VPN and the same server was used by spammers or something. If it were just that, I wouldn't blame the site. The problem is the unprofessional way this was done. I was prevented from even viewing that forum while logged into my account, and given the following error message:
You have been banned for the following reason: Spam. Please contact the administrator if this was done in error.
There was no apparent way to contact the administrator. That's the real problem! Lack of a clear and apparent way to appeal a ban.

long ago, after Zynga started killing off many games I fell in love with, such as FarmVille and ForestVille, I got into the alternatives from a developer called Team Lava, who had their own forum for discussion. There was a new game, FarmVille 2, out, and I inquired as to whether a clone of that were also being developed (they already had one for the original FarmVille, called Farm Story). My posts kept instantly disappearing shortly after I made them. No warning, no PM, no error. I made another thread asking why my posts weren't sticking, then got insta banned. I never did figure out why.

Farm Story 2 eventually came out, but by then my experience with their forum soured my interest.
